Why Get Braces
The reasons patients get braces range from severe malocclusion to minor spacing or crowding issues. Malocclusions such as overbite, underbite and open bite are diagnosed when the teeth and jaws do not fit together properly. Spacing and crowding occur when the size of the mouth and the size of the teeth do not match.
Both of these situations can lead to health and aesthetic issues if not corrected. Some of these issues include:
- Compromised chewing function and speaking
- Risk of gum disease because of difficulty keeping teeth and gums clean
- Premature tooth wear
- Jaw joint damage and pain
- Teeth grinding and jaw clenching
When Should I Get Braces?
Earlier is better, but it’s never too late to get a beautiful smile. Dr. Mekouar and Dr. Mendes will evaluate your current orthodontic situation and provide you with the best orthodontic treatment plan to reach your goal of a gorgeous and healthy smile.
Because Dr. Mekouar and Dr. Mendes are experts in early orthodontic intervention, they agree with the recommendation of the American Association of Orthodontists that children should be evaluated no later than age seven. Early screening gives your child the best chance at a healthy and attractive smile. Dr. Mekouar and Dr. Mendes are skilled in using early treatment to guide jaw growth making treatment shorter and less involved in some cases.
Adult and teen orthodontics in northern Virginia has skyrocketed in the past two decades. As the health benefits and career edge of a great smile become more and more obvious, many people are wanting the life-changing results Dr. Mekouar and Dr. Mendes can provide at Gosmiles.
What Are My Orthodontic Options?
Orthodontics has come a long way. The precision of treatment options has allowed patients with bite issues or malocclusion to get remarkable results. Even patients needing minor to moderate teeth straightening have been amazed by the choices at Gosmiles.
The most well-known and widely used option for straightening teeth and correcting bites is traditional brackets and wires. For teens this is especially common and a little fun as they can choose their band colors and get involved in treatment.
Traditional braces typically are recommended to correct bite or malocclusion issues. Depending on the complexity of the situation, the amount of early treatment the patient received and patient compliance, 2 ½ years is the average time frame for wearing traditional braces.
For those who may not want their orthodontic treatment to be as obvious, like adults, you may have the choice of doing clear or ceramic brackets with your orthodontic treatment. Ceramic brackets are less noticeable than traditional brackets and are favored by older teens and adults. It is important that you are diligent about keeping your oral hygiene a daily priority, however. Avoiding foods and beverages that can stain the ceramic brackets is also recommended with this bracket option.
You will want to discuss the options with one of our expert orthodontists to make the best decision for you about what kind of treatment you want to have.
For patients who want completely unnoticeable orthodontic treatment, there is Invisalign. While Invisalign treatment is not possible for every patient, especially more complex cases, there have been big steps forward in treating most orthodontic cases with this option.
Invisalign is a great option for patients with spacing or crowding issues. If you are a candidate for Invisalign, you will love the convenience of being able to remove your trays to eat, drink and brush your teeth and floss. Compliance is key to complete treatment within the six to eighteen-month average timeframe. Our orthodontists offer free consultations to see if you are a candidate for Invisalign.
You’re finally at the end of your orthodontic treatment – congratulations! Thought you were home free? Not quite yet…there is the matter of that retainer.
Long the headache of parents everywhere is the retainer. You’ve put your child through braces and nagged them to brush and floss. Now you must trust that they will wear the finishing treatment that will make all that hard work stay put.
There are many different kinds of retainers available, and your orthodontist will choose the best one for your teeth to maintain your smile at the end of treatment. To address any questions or concerns, our orthodontists will talk with you a few visits before your child is finished with braces to get an idea of what options are available to you for keeping that smile straight for a lifetime.
